Copper Toxicity, Birth Defects, Autism Risk
Updated: Oct 21, 2020
Did you know there are different types of zinc supplements? Did you know your body could need a certain type of zinc compared to someone else? Thank you holistic health for remembering that everyone is an individual and there is no one size fits all approach to wellness!

I want to start this blog post by stressing how much I love running at home detailed functional medicine labs with our clients. The best part about running functional medicine labs is that it tells us exactly what the body needs! It eliminates the guess work from our wellness journey and gets us feeling better ASAP! One of our favorite labs comes from an easy hair sample and allows us to check the ratio between copper & zinc. When I completed this lab for myself, I had too much copper compared to zinc! Excess copper comes from many factors but for me personally, I had a copper IUD for one year as my preferred birth control method at the time. Boy was I glad to ditch that once I had access to my copper and zinc levels and ratios! You can visit our blog post all about our journey with hormonal birth control here to read more about that topic!
So why is it alarming to have too much copper compared to zinc in our body?! It's linked to autism and birth defects in our future children. I personally would do anything to lower my future child's risk for both autism and birth defects and I have a feeling you would too! So at Balanced Friends, We insist on checking this ratio with our fertility clients or anyone thinking about becoming pregnant soon. We believe in getting the body of both future Mom and Dad as healthy as possible before becoming pregnant. This will make for a healthier lower risk pregnancy as well as a healthier baby.
It's important to note that our body needs both copper & zinc to function properly but not in excess and it must be in healthy ratio. Often times these very important ratios are overlooked by many healthcare professionals. Most of the time they would see low zinc and tell you to take a zinc supplement and send you on your way without ever checking your copper to zinc ratio. This could cause you to supplement with the wrong type/dosage of zinc and potentially cause more harm than good. THIS is the major difference between choosing to work with a holistic healthcare provider and why We are so passionate about the work we do for our clients! This also highlights why it's so important to work with a practitioner like us to help you find the right/safe supplements for your body. It's harmful and irresponsible to run to the nearest drug store and start taking supplements just because you read online that you needed them. So please do not do that!
This lab is the perfect place to start on your holistic health journey because it provides us with a ton of information about your health. It not only checks for the copper zinc ratio but it helps us to evaluate your response to stress and screen for heavy metal toxicity. It's easy to take at home and comes with free return shipping! Healing from the comfort of your own home has never been so easy. This is the future of health and We are so thrilled to be part of the movement. Contact us for more details and pricing so we can help to take some of the guesswork out of your unique wellness journey!
