Here we go again—baby number three! I’m officially a boy mom through and through, and after two rounds of pregnancy, newborn phases, and product trial-and-error, I’ve learned a lot about what’s actually essential.
Let’s be honest: they say all you need for a baby is some diapers and clothes, but —that’s not realistic. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to buy a little (or a lot) more to make life easier and more fun! Over the years, I’ve experimented with so many baby items and brands. Now, with my third on the way, I’ve really honed in on what works and what doesn’t.
For me, it’s all about products that can go the distance. I want items that last through multiple babies, are made with quality materials, and are as non-toxic as possible. So, if you’re preparing for a new baby or looking to upgrade your essentials, let’s dive in.
Why I Focus on Non-Toxic and Reusable Essentials
With each baby, I’ve become more mindful of what I’m bringing into our home—especially with how delicate and vulnerable newborns are. It’s shocking how many baby products out there are full of questionable materials. I’ve made it a priority to look for items made from natural, safe materials that I can use over and over again, both for practicality and peace of mind.
My Essentials:
1. Diapers & Wipes: Yes, they really are essential! We are a cloth diapering family but with some flexibility. I use cloth most of the time, but when traveling or out all day, I opt for disposables. One big switch I made between babies 1 and 2 was using disposables at night—no overnight cloth combo worked as well. And let’s be real—sleep is essential! My favorite disposable diaper for quality and materials is Bambo Nature.
2. Organic Baby Clothing: Opt for organic cotton clothing free from pesticides, flame retardants, and chemicals. Brands like Little Planet by Carter’s, Burt’s Bees Baby, Kyte Baby, Kate Quinn, and Touched By Nature offer adorable and chemical-free options for your baby’s delicate skin.
3. Non-Toxic Skincare: Choose gentle and non-toxic skincare for baby’s sensitive skin. Earth Mama Organics and Motherlove make organic, all-natural products without harmful additives.
4. Non-Toxic Baby Bottles: Glass bottles are durable, easy to clean, and completely safe. Brands like Lifefactory and Dr. Browns provide glass and stainless steel alternatives to plastic bottles with harmful chemicals.
5. Swaddles & Blankets: You can never have enough! My favorites are Kyte Baby blankets (so buttery soft) and Aden + Anais muslin swaddles for lightweight comfort.
6. Organic Bedding & Mattresses: Create a safe sleep space with organic bedding and mattresses. Brands like Naturepedic and Avocado Green Mattressoffer non-toxic options free from harmful flame retardants and chemicals.
7. Babywearing Favorites: With multiple kids, babywearing is a lifesaver! My go-to carriers are the Ergobaby Omni 360 and Solly Baby Wrap for comfort, ease, and support.
8. Natural Laundry Detergents: Keep baby’s clothes clean without synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals. Branch Basics is my favorite because I can use it for the whole family—baby clothes, household cleaning, and more!
9. Chemical-Free Nursery Essentials: Choose non-toxic nursery furniture and decor. Brands like Delta, Babyletto and Oeuf prioritize sustainable materials and low-VOC finishes for a healthier sleep and play space.
10. Car Seat & Stroller: Look for car seats without flame retardants, like Nuna or Uppababy Jordan Wool. A stroller should fit your lifestyle—whether lightweight for travel or all-terrain for active parents.
11. Non-Toxic Pacifiers & Teethers: Avoid plastic and opt for natural rubber or medical-grade silicone options like Natursutten and Haakaa to keep harmful chemicals away from baby’s mouth.
12. Safe Feeding Accessories: For starting solids, choose silicone bibs, stainless steel or bamboo bowls, and toxin-free utensils from brands like Avanchy and EZPZ.
13. Baby Monitor (Low EMF Options): Wireless baby monitors emit EMFs, so I recommend Infant Optics DXR-8 (non-WiFi) or Nanit (with privacy settings).
14. Air Purifier for the Nursery: A clean air environment is essential for your baby’s health, especially in a nursery where they’ll be spending a lot of time. I recommend the Air Doctor purifier—it effectively removes harmful particles like VOCs, allergens, and even the smallest pollutants, creating a safe, clean space for your baby to breathe.
15. Natural Diaper Cream: Avoid petroleum-based creams. Earth Mama and Weleda offer safe, effective options for preventing diaper rash. Honestly, I reach for coconut oil the most for the diaper areas or any rash.
16. Non-Toxic Play Mats: PVC-free, non-toxic play mats like Lovevery create a safe, chemical-free space for tummy time and playtime.
17. Sound Machine: Absolutely essential! White noise helps baby sleep better by mimicking the womb and blocking household noise. Invest in a high-quality, long-lasting sound machine that can be used well into toddler years.
18. Infant Probiotics: A healthy gut from the start! Probiotics support digestion, immunity, and reduce colic. I recommend Smidge or Biomeology (code balancedfriends to save) infant probiotics for a clean, effective formula.
19. Breastfeeding Essentials (If Nursing): A Haakaa silicone pump, nursing pads, and organic nipple balm can make breastfeeding smoother and more comfortable.
20. Snuggle Me Organic Lounger is a must-have for those early months for me. It’s made with soft, organic fabric and provides a cozy, secure spot for your baby to rest, play, or lounge. The gentle, supportive design mimics the feeling of being held, which helps comfort your little one. It’s also perfect for tummy time and makes transitioning from your arms to a safe resting place so much easier.
