Is Your Drinking Water Safe?

What kind of water you’re drinking really does matter! We’re told to drink water and lots of it for SO MANY valid reasons. But what if we’re drinking water full of other harmful junk - does that neglect the benefits? Are all filters created equal? Is bottled water safe? How much water? Are you washing your food with tap water? Using it to cook with? So many questions when it comes to something as simple as drink water! The truth is... tap water is dirty AF!! It contains heavy metals, harmful bacteria, fluoride, plastic, recycled sewage, pharmaceuticals, animal waste, and more. Our first recommendation is if you’re drinking/using tap water- STOP! Now lets talk about what you can do about it! For starters we can filter our water but it's very important to note that not all filters are created equal. Most filters are only filtering out larger particles and chlorine to improve taste. If you’re not sure what your fridge filter or pitcher filter is actually removing. Look into it! Do a water test. You can even have someone come and test your water. A lot of times this is free. I can tell you that our filter was not doing much for us as I thought. Look into getting a reverse osmosis system installed in your house. You don’t have to do the whole house if you can’t afford that. They make smaller ones that go under the kitchen sink for fairly inexpensive considering all the benefit and peace of mind you will gain knowing that you are truly drinking safe clean water! If you are living in a temporary place and it doesn't make sense to buy a reverse osmosis, you should consider the Berkey Water Filtration System. And be sure to upgrade for the filter that removes the fluoride! But don’t just assume your filter is doing what you want it to. Do your research!
**We currently are a small family of 2 and drink a ton of water. I recommend getting a bigger Berkey like we did to avoid having to fill it up all the time!
So what's wrong with all that stuff they add to our water? Glad you asked! Lets start with heavy metals including Mercury, Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Aluminum, and Nickel to name a few. They cause neurological toxicity. SCARY STUFF! When you have a build up of heavy metals in your body it can lead to many chronic health issues such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis that people often associate with the natural aging process and neglect to test for heavy metal toxicity. With heavy metal toxicity you may experience symptoms like behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, brain fog, trouble concentrating, difficulty learning, poor memory, chronic fatigue, skin irritation, digestive issues, aches and pains, tremors, and more. Heavy metals love to get stored in fat so it's important to note that a large amount of our brain is made up of fat.
Next up...chlorine in our water. It's added to the water to make it "clean" and to kill bacteria. It's worth noting that chlorine is a chemical and not one we should put in our body or even on or skin through our shower water and pools! When we swallow chlorine we kill our precious gut bacteria. We all need a healthy balance of gut bacteria to help or bodies function at 100%. When the bacteria in our gut becomes imbalanced we see symptoms like skin issues, acne, brain fog, fertility issues, headaches, bloat, gas, stomach pain, and more, Our gut health is at the center of our overall health.
Now lets touch on fluoride in our water. As a couple of Dental Hygienists turned Integrative Health Practitioners...fluoride is a hard one for us! From early on in our studies, we were taught that fluoride is GOLD when it comes to cavity prevention. We are here to tell you that mechanical removal of cavity causing bacteria through brushing and flossing is enough to prevent tooth decay. To put is simply if there is no bacteria there can be no cavity! Proper oral hygiene is a topic for another day. Back to fluoride... there is a difference between topical and systemic fluoride. Ingesting fluoride has been shown to cause major trouble for our thyroid. Thyroid health is crucial for many reasons and it should be top priority to keep our thyroid as healthy as possible! It helps to control our hormones, fertility, metabolism, weight control, and so much more. All the systems in our body is connected so if one is not functioning properly it can cause issues in the rest of our body.
Last up...PLASTIC! This is a huge no no! The dangers of plastic is thankfully becoming more main stream. We have lot's of issues with plastics but our main concern is that it disrupts our hormones. When we disrupt our hormones we suffer from issues like infertility, inability to lose weight, unexplained weight gain, period problems, irregular cycles, and more because or precious hormones control EVERYTHING!
